Our Program

We Strive...

To provide opportunities and assistance to children to help them fulfill their potential. Our hope is the relationship between the mentors and the mentee will grow and be maintained over time. To maintain the viability of our program and to create the best possible learning environment for our mentees, practical restrictions have be placed upon the participants.

Selection Process

Principals, soliciting the advice of other school personnel, at select schools choose students for consideration. The WSF leadership and mentors interview the students and consult with the school prior to making final selections. At the conclusion of the process, names are submitted for approval to the Board of Directors.

Mentor Requirements

Mentors are interviewed, background checked, and drug tested. Further, they attend an initial mentor training class and participate in up to three mentor training classes per year while in the program.

Mentee Requirements

  • The first two years of additional schooling beyond high school is recommended to be located in Maricopa County, Arizona.
  • A Washington Street student must be full-time (a minimum of 12 credit hours) unless the Board of Directors approves otherwise.
  • Attend summer bridge program prior to entering college.
  • Maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.
  • Submit registration and tuition invoice to WSF in time for payment.
  • Submit transcript of grades at the end of each grading period.
  • Home or dormitory residence in the freshman year.

Activities Between Mentees and Mentors

  • At least two meetings a month are required between student and mentor.
  • One of the meetings is a group meeting between all the students and mentors together.
  • The separate meeting must be arranged between mentor and student.
  • The mentor will also be a participant in parent-student-teacher conferences and monitor school progress.
  • The mentor and mentee will also be required to write at least one newsletter article each per year.

Post-Secondary Assistance

  • An award of up to $6,250 a year will be available for post-high school education, upon the approval of the Board of Directors.
  • The award is to be used for tuition, books, fees and other expenses.
  • $25,000 or more is available for higher education for each student, depending upon the chosen program. *This may be raised over time.
  • The Board of Directors can consider postgraduate studentships upon recommendation of the mentor, after conducting a review of studentship amounts available for future years.
